Philosophy of diseases
Blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid – all are lifetime diseases. They never go away in his / her lifetime. They can only be controlled, but there is no permanent cure. Over a period of time, they start become resistant to medicines also. To some extent medicines are useful, but they cannot eradicate these diseases. One should try to understand the root cause for the disease and plan how to get away. Most of the diseases creep in; depend on the food we eat. Nature has provided great foods on this planet for us. One should prepare the food with minimal changes before consuming. Eating this way keeps diseases at bay. Now-a-days processed foods, refined oils, frozen foods, fast foods are popular, but they alter the natural food to wide extent. These foods have no value addition to our body and they become entry points for the diseases. During olden days also, these diseases are present but numbers are very low compared to today. They’ve become like monsters and millions of people are affected due to massive changes in life style and food habits.
In this context, let me discuss about a classic case. In India, certain places of the country, one of the important trace element iodine was not available in natural foods. People belong to that region got affected by goiter disease having root cause of iodine deficiency. This had happened about 5 to 6 decades ago. To counteract this deficiency, government had ordered salt producing companies to add iodine along with table salt and distribute in that particular region. The decision worked out and people in that region were free of goiter disease over a period of time. But the iodized salt started spreading to other regions of the country where there is no deficiency of iodine in natural foods. People started consuming iodized salt and gradually it resulted in excess iodine and they impacted by hyperthyroidism! Even children had become victims. Medicines weren’t effective for this case. Unless the root cause is addressed the disease can’t be cured. If people stop eating iodized salt, the disease gradually disappear. I quoted this scenario to assert the fact that lifestyle and food habits play great role in developing or eradicating diseases.
Still the medicines are wonderful life saving ones. If someone didn’t invent insulin, majority of the mankind wouldn’t have survived on this globe. Medicines are great, they are scientifically proved and they saved lives of millions of people from all kind of diseases. We can use medicines for immediate and quick relief, but they should not become part and parcel of our life. For any chronic disease, there underlies one root cause(s). It is our responsibility to find it out and work on the root cause to eradicate it. Let me quote an example as below –
Everyone know about two types of cholesterols viz., good & bad. LDL is being stamped as bad cholesterol. But medical science proved LDL is required for the production of body cell membrane and it plays vital role in brain function. Nature had created two types of cholesterols and both of them are equally required for the body. Good and bad types are only our perception. LDL is not harmful cholesterol as it does not form into plaques inside blood vessels. Instead, oxidation of LDL by free radicals results into plaque buildup. Hence there is no role of LDL in development of atherosclerosis. Using medicines to reduce LDL levels is incorrect, and lifelong medication is a blunder, but majority of people are following it. The root cause for this is to minimize the free radical damage. This can be addressed by promoting good amounts of antioxidants by consuming relevant foods,
The technology had developed so much that it is affecting natural food sources. Eating natural or organic foods is healthy and nutritious. Same thing applies to poultry and meat also. During these days, availability of natural eggs has become extinct. Chickens are being transformed by genetically modified organism technology and the eggs produced by this kind of chickens are harmful to health and leads to cancer eventually. Also eating chickens affected by this technology leads to cancer. Fish is also being fed with artificial food for quick growth and eating this kind of fish imbalances hormones in our body and push the people nearer to cancer. The milk produced by buffalo affected by this technology is also harmful to us.
The technology is changing our life, food habits and the extent of physical work. We can’t stop the evolution of technology but we should see to it that our life style and food habits are not deviated too much. When you see any food, spare a moment to think how much is it being altered from its natural form. If the deviation is too much, it is better to avoid it. Also check how it is being prepared. For example reusing of once heated oil and reheated food is harmful to health. Any food overheated turns into charcoal and eating carbon leads to cancer. And research is going on whether freezing the food causes cancer.
Other face to evolution of technology is environmental pollution. It has effect on air, water, soil, trees and animals. These are the factors we do not have control. But they do play role in development of diseases. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate or ESR parameter in the blood indicates the amount of chemical waste inside our body which eventually leads to inflammation. If you are not aware of this, please find out ESR parameter in blood. But we are helpless on this corner.
Another major factor that is creeping into all over the world is food adulteration. It has massive impact on our health and I will discuss on this topic in a separate post.
Let me conclude by saying health is wealth and you are the boss of your body and health. Take care of your body and I am asserting on to eat organic, eat natural food, and stay healthy.
